Following a couple of lo-fi recordings, Taylor Kirk -- better known as Timber Timbre -- has finally released a proper self-titled disc.
Not that we expected gleaming stereo from the Toronto-based singer-songwriter, whose haunting blues-drenched ditties recall the lush and lonesome musings of Jon Brion's cohorts and the AM-radio reverb of boy-scout-voiced indie poster-boy M. Ward.
But every stark chord and every soulful utterance is spit-polished to shine as much as these dark and rusty-hued gems deserve to, and the results are haunting without being completely unsettling.
Naturally Timber Timbre's solid-as-oak material is paired with something that's as smart and spatial, yet non-impenetrable, when they play Call the Office tomorrow night. Enter headliners Rock Plaza Central.
Less freaky than their nu-folk counterparts -- though literary leader Chris Eaton's goat-like wail begs to differ -- the band is finally set to release the follow-up to their grand 2006 disc Are We Not Horses.
Inspired by William Faulkner's Light in August, the album is a love letter to the pregnant female protagonist who sets on a journey to find the man she thinks loves her. The disc is tentatively due in May.
Cover is $6 at the doors, which open at 9 p.m.
