TIMBER TIMBRE - Timber Timbre
Out of This Spark
"I was a spook for you, another ghoul," sings Taylor Kirk, who possibly believes in love after death. Kirk, the singer-songwriter behind Toronto's Timber Timbre, makes trippy, cinematic acoustic music, delivering it with a puzzling smile and an unsettling serenity. Magic Arrow is small-scale psychedelic surf, Lay Down in the Tall Grass has a queerly struck organ, and the blues vamping Trouble Comes Knocking redoubles the fright of the Animals' take on The House of the Rising Sun (which is also quoted on Until the Night Is Over). On the album-closing No Bold Villain, Kirk eerily croons, "One of us is not normal, and it might not be you." My thoughts exactly.
Timber Timbre play's Montreal's Il Motore, Feb. 7; Toronto's Music Gallery, Feb. 12; and the Grist Mill, Waterloo, Ont., Feb. 13.
