Timber Timbre (Out of This Spark)
By Benjamin Boles
NNNN
Technically, you’d file this under blues/country/folk, but that description is somewhat misleading. Yes, these songs are firmly rooted in traditional American music, but this take on the form is much more idiosyncratic than most.
The arrangements are stark and minimalist, drenched in echoes and as soulful as they are moody and dark. This is actually the third album by the local band, and they’ve really managed to hone this vibe into a strong, cohesive statement.
Refreshingly restrained and understated, but equally confident and arresting.
